DIY Acrylic Frag Tank & Stand

So I got tired of having frags laying all over my display tank so I finally put together a frag tank. I built it out of acrylic and connected the plumbing into the sump I'm using on my main tank.

All the material cost about $150. I had all the acrylic cut to the sizes I needed since I don't have the tools to make nice clean cuts like they could.

Dimensions: 30"W x 30"L x 16"H
Capacity: Approx: 60 gallons

Tank Materials:

Cell-Cast Acrylic
(a.) 2-30"x16"x1/4"

(b.) 2-29.5"x16"x1/4"
(c.) 1-30"x30"x1/4"
(d.) 2-30"x4"x1/4"
(e.) 2-22"x4"x1/4"

Weld-on #4
Weld-on #16
Weld-on Applicator needle

Tank Construction

1. Place 1a sheet on a flat surface.
2. Position 2b's vertically on each end of the 1a using a support. You may want to use electrical tape to hold the pieces together. And another type of support to hold the pieces vertical. I use tape attached to my ceiling and the top of the sheet.
3. Using a square, make sure both pieces are at a 90 degree angle on the 1a.
4. Place 3 pins about 5 inches apart under the edges of the two sheets where you will be welding.
5. Using weld-on #4 and an applicator needle apply a generous bead along the edges you are welding. Remove the pins 15-25seconds after applying the bead.
6. Allow 4+ hours to set. (Go drink a few beers)

7. Position a second (a) sheet on a flat surface.
8. Carefully position the three pieces you welded together on the (a) sheet to complete the square shape.
9. Position, tape, apply a bead of weld-on #4 as decribed above.
10. Allow 4+ hours to set.(Go have a couple more beers)

11. Lay out 2(d's) on a flat surface and position 2(e's) inbetween the d's creating a square shape. This will be your top support once welded together.(You may want to use tape to hold the four pieces flush together.)
12. Carefully place the Square you welded together earlier on the top support pieces. (Tape if needed)
13. Insert pins to gap the pieces you will be welding together.
14. Apply a bead of Weld-on #4 to secure the support as described previously. (You will need a helper to remove the pins for you as you go along 15-25secs after the bead is applied)
16. At this point you can also put a bead of Weld-on #4 where pieces e and d connect to each other.
17. Allow 4+ hours to set. (You may have had too many beers by this point so find something else to do)

18. Lay out (c) on a flat surface and carefully place the tank pieces you welded earlier on top.
19. Position, Tape, and weld the pieces together as described above. (Again, you will need a helper to pull the pins.)
20. Allow at least 1 week to fully cure. I let mine cure for two weeks before testing for leaks. If you find any leaks, you can dry out the tank and use some Weld-on #4 or Weld-on #16 to seal up the leaks.

Tips

Practice using Weld-On #4 on scrap acrylic before attempting it on the real thing.

Use shims to close any large gaps between the pieces before welding.

Stand Materials:

(a.) 5-2x4x27"
(b.) 8-2x4x30"
(c.) 8-2x4x22 7/8"
*Cut to exact measurements*
(d.) 1-30"x30" plywood
1LB 2" wood screws

*Cut the c's after you have connected the uprights so that you can take exact measurements to have a snug fit for the supports.

Stand Construction:

Top Frame
1. Lay out 3 a's and 2 b's
2. Screw end boards (b) to supports (a)

Bottom Frame
1. Lay out 2 a's and 2 b's
2. Screw end boards (b) to supports (a)

Uprights/Supports/Surface
1. Screw the uprights (4 b's) on the inside of the top and bottom frames on each corner.
2. Insert the supports (8 c's) flush with the uprights and screw together.
3. Screw d onto the top frame.
(You may want to add some scrap 2x4's to the middle support as pictured.)
